Saint Nicholas pushed the man aside and marched into the inn, heading straight back to the storeroom. The innkeeper followed behind, too terrified to get in his way. Saint Nicholas stopped in front of the pickle barrel where the innkeeper had hidden the bodies of the three students. He pulled the top off the barrel and looked at the murky brine within. Then holding a hand over the barrel, Saint Nicholas commanded the three students to get out.

One by one, the three students climbed out of the barrel, whole and alive once more. Seeing this, the innkeeper fell to the floor and begged Saint Nicholas for forgiveness. Saint Nicholas looked deep into the man’s soul and could see that the man had truly changed. He granted him forgiveness, but made him vow that he would always help children in need and never accept any money for helping them.

The students, of course, told everyone what had happened to them, and once again Saint Nicholas became famous as the special saint who watched over children. The story proved so popular that it spread all over the country and in many places was even performed as a play on Saint Nicholas’s day.
